The 1st exit

TAKE THE 4TH EXIT
An exhibition by Barry Plotkin

This is an exhibition that first of all needs each work and its visual story to be quietly listened to and only then to go on to connect with the materials making-up each of them. The title of this exhibition was taken from the computerized voice instruction that car route navigation systems give as they approach a round-about on the route.

Barry Plotkin is a “contemporary gatherer”; our original ancestors gathered leaves, twigs, pebbles, animal bones, shells and anything else they took a liking to and that they could carry back to their sanctuaries. Barry strolls through fields of cast off materials that are discarded from industry, metal twigs, plastic shells, the bones of discarded instruments, objects he or someone else has already used or anything else that attracts and stimulates him to gather and keep. Then just like the ancestral gatherer, he contemplates what he found and was inspired by, absorbing and drawing-in their hidden secrets to create with love, almost with a sense of piety, a new visual story with echoes and interpretations of what they have already gone through. Whereas, the ancestral gatherer followed the gurgle of running water or was wary of the roar of animals so Barry navigates his way, being attentive to the voice of technology instructing him as he approaches the roundabout: "Take the fourth exit". Of course, one can add another interpretation, the works pass and flirt over the artist’s memories of his life, childhood, youth, middle age and maturity “The 4th Exit”

 The reconstruction and use of discarded materials to create something different from them is one of the characteristics of the creative person, who is at one with the spirit of his materials, their physical characteristics and knows how they will respond as he uses them. Barry understands and knows his materials by giving and receiving their unquestioning “love”. In the book “The story of Craft 'The craftsman`s role in Society” Edward Lucie-Smith writes that in his opinion “to be a person” means developing a sense of responsibility by him taking his fate, in his own hands and part of that, is the ability to create

Early man saw soul and life in everything in nature, while we as contemporary and cultural people today learn to separate between the spirit and the material as if they were two separate entities with the first perceived as superior and the other inferior. However, contemporary people who are involved with different materials understand and sense that materials or objects have their own essence and respond to different environments such as heat, cold, stretching etc. Creators like Barry, know that each material has its own spirit which cannot be separated from it. They are interdependent and completely in harmony. The eight works were created during the last year and chronologically displayed according to the artist's preference. Essentially they are bundles of feelings and memories in which Plotkin arranges his life feelings and attempts to establish stable and fertile ground for the creation of new works, intelligent, exciting and unique such as he has created over the years that I have known him. Eight is the number that symbolizes the infinite and renewal. I did not ask Barry if he intentionally chose to create eight works, or if it just happened

תערוכה של ברי פלוטקין

זוהי תערוכה שמצריכה קודם כל ה ק ש ב ה שקטה לסיפור החזותי של כל יצירה ויצירה ואחר כך גם ה א ז נ ה לחומרים מהם מורכבת כל אחת מהיצירות. את שם התערוכה, הגה ברי מהקול המכני שנשמע מתוכנת הדרכת הנסיעה כאשר מגיעים למעגל תנועה.

ברי פלוטקין הוא 'מלקט עכשווי', בעוד קדמונינו היו מלקטים בטבע עלים, זרדים, אבנים קטנות, גידי חיות, צדפים וכל מה שמצא חן בעיניהם ויכלו לשאת אל מקום המבטחים שלהם. ברי צועד בין שדות החומרים הזמינים כיום שלכת תעשיתית, זרדים מתכתיים, קונכיות פלסטיות שלדי מכשירים, שרידים מחפצים שהוא או מישהו אחר כבר השתמש בהם, כל מה שמושך את עיניו ומגרה את ידיו לחפון ולאגור. אחר כך בדיוק כאותו מלקט קדמןן הוא מתבונן במה שמצא ועורר את סקרנותו כלפיו, סופג/ נושם את הסודות שנותרו בו ויוצר באהבה, כמעט בתחושת קדושה סיפור חזותי חדש עם הדים של מה שכבר קרה לחומר הזה ועם פרשנותו שלו. בעוד המלקט הקדום היה הולך בעקבות קולות פכפוך מים, או נזהר כששמע שאגות חיות, כך ברי לעיתים מנווט את דרכו כשהוא קשוב לקול הטכנולוגי המורה לו בזמן הקפת ככר:”קח את היציאה הרביעית !”. אפשר כמובן להוסיף פרשנות נוספת, היצירות חולפות עוברות על פני זכרונות חייו של היוצר, ילדות, נעורים , בגרות והגיל הגמלאי ה'יציאה הרביעית'.

סידור והרכבה מחדש של חומרים ישנים ויצירת משהו חדש ושונה מהם, הינו אחד המאפיינים של האדם היוצר, שמכיר את 'נפש החומרים' שלו, מודע לתכונותיהם ויודע איך הם יגיבו כשהוא ישתמש בהם. ברי שמכיר ויודע את החומרים שלו 'מתעלס' עמם והם משיבים לו אהבה. בספר The story of Craft ' The craftsman`s role in Society כותב אדוארד לוסי-סמית [Edward Lucie-Smith] שלדעתו 'להיות אדם' משמעותו התפתחותה של תחושת האחריות לנטילת גורלו בידיו וחלק מזה היא היכולת ליצור.

האדם הקדמון ראה נשמה וחיים בכל דבר בטבע, בעוד אנו כאנשים 'עכשוויים-תרבותיים' למדנו להפריד בין הרוח ובין החומר כאילו הן שתי ישויות נפרדות, כאשר הראשונה נתפסת כנעלה והשניה כירודה. אנשים עכשוויים שמתעסקים בחומרים שונים, מבינים וחשים שאכן גם לחומר/חפץ יש תכונות אופי שעל פיהן הוא מגיב על מצבים שונים כגון חום,קור,מתיחה וכו'. אצל יוצרים כמו ברי הרוח נמצאת בחומר ואי אפשר להפריד ביניהם הם תלויים זו בזה ומשולבים לחלוטין.

שמונה היצירות נוצרו במשך השנה האחרונה, ומוצגות לקהל באופן כרונולוגי – אישי של האמן. במהותן הן בעיקר מיכלי רגשות וזכרונות שבהן מסדר פלוטקין, את תחושות ונסיונות חייו כדי שישמשו קרקע יציבה ודשנה לצמיחת יצירות חדשות, חכמות, מרגשות ויחודייות כמו שיצר במשך השנים שאני מכירה אותו. שמונה הוא מספר המסמל גם את האין-סוף וצמיחה מחדש. לא שאלתי את ברי אם בכוונה תיכנן ליצור שמונה עבודות, או אם זה פשוט קרה.
