\n An exhibition by Barry Plotkin<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an exhibition that first of all needs each work and its visual story to be quietly listened to and only then to go on to connect with the materials making-up each of them. The title of this exhibition was taken from the computerized voice instruction that car route navigation systems give as they approach a round-about on the route.<\/p>\n

Barry Plotkin is a \u201ccontemporary gatherer\u201d; our original ancestors gathered leaves, twigs, pebbles, animal bones, shells and anything else they took a liking to and that they could carry back to their sanctuaries. Barry strolls through fields of cast off materials that are discarded from industry, metal twigs, plastic shells, the bones of discarded instruments, objects he or someone else has already used or anything else that attracts and stimulates him to gather and keep. Then just like the ancestral gatherer, he contemplates what he found and was inspired by, absorbing and drawing-in their hidden secrets to create with love, almost with a sense of piety, a new visual story with echoes and interpretations of what they have already gone through. Whereas, the ancestral gatherer followed the gurgle of running water or was wary of the roar of animals so Barry navigates his way, being attentive to the voice of technology instructing him as he approaches the roundabout: "Take the fourth exit". Of course, one can add another interpretation, the works pass and flirt over the artist\u2019s memories of his life, childhood, youth, middle age and maturity \u201cThe 4th Exit\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0The reconstruction and use of discarded materials to create something different from them is one of the characteristics of the creative person, who is at one with the spirit of his materials, their physical characteristics and knows how they will respond as he uses them. Barry understands and knows his materials by giving and receiving their unquestioning \u201clove\u201d. In the book \u201cThe story of Craft 'The craftsman`s role in Society\u201d Edward Lucie-Smith writes that in his opinion \u201cto be a person\u201d means developing a sense of responsibility by him taking his fate, in his own hands and part of that, is the ability to create<\/p>\n

Early man saw soul and life in everything in nature, while we as contemporary and cultural people today learn to separate between the spirit and the material as if they were two separate entities with the first perceived as superior and the other inferior. However, contemporary people who are involved with different materials understand and sense that materials or objects have their own essence and respond to different environments such as heat, cold, stretching etc. Creators like Barry, know that each material has its own spirit which cannot be separated from it. They are interdependent and completely in harmony. The eight works were created during the last year and chronologically displayed according to the artist's preference. Essentially they are bundles of feelings and memories in which Plotkin arranges his life feelings and attempts to establish stable and fertile ground for the creation of new works, intelligent, exciting and unique such as he has created over the years that I have known him. Eight is the number that symbolizes the infinite and renewal. I did not ask Barry if he intentionally chose to create eight works, or if it just happened<\/p>\n
